全国英語スピーチコンテスト優勝!!/English Speech Contest
「勝つことよりも、新しい友達を作りたい」これが2月10日、渋谷にある青少年オリンピック記念青少年総合センター出開催された第12回全国英語スピーチコンテストに臨む金沢有明（かなざわありあ）の 姿勢でした。
“More than winning, I’m hoping to make new friends.” This was Aria Kanazawa’s perspective on her participation in the 12th National Speech Contest, held at the National Olympics Memorial Youth Center in Shibuya on February 10th.
有明はGKAの11年生でIBコースに在籍しており、コース内の活動であるCAS活動の一環として群馬県の英語スピーチコンテストに参加しました。彼女はきわめて明るく、教室内でもいつも活発で、哲学的な討論や意見に興味を持ち、しかし話の中心となるのは恥ずかしがり、決してしない生徒でした。よって今回は、彼女が一歩前進する機会でもあり、同級生や教員が既に知っていた彼女のレトリックスキルを披露する機会でもありました。
Aria is an 11th grade International Baccalaureate student at our school, and she had initially entered Gunma’s speech contest as one of her CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) experiences. Exceedingly bright, Aria has always been an active participant in the classroom, and relishes engaging in philosophical discussions and arguments, but has always shied away from taking center stage. For her, this was an opportunity to stretch herself, as well as a chance to share the rhetorical skills that her peers and teachers already knew she had.
彼女は自身が本当に興味のあった「日本のペット産業における子犬工場の普及問題」というトピックを選びました。彼女のスピーチは実質的にほぼ完ぺきで、英語科教員からの指導はほとんど必要ありませんでした。数回のリハーサルの後、新しい人に出会い友人を作るという望みを持って、群馬県英語スピーチコンテストに参加しました。そして、本人も驚いたようでしたが、優勝トロフィーと関東・甲信越地区大会への出場権を手にして帰ってきました。
For her topic, she chose to discuss something that was of real interest to her – the pervasive problem with puppy mills in the Japanese pet industry. Her speech was practically perfect, needing only minimal feedback from GKA’s English teachers. After a few rehearsals, she went to the Gunma speech contest with the hope of meeting new people and making new friends – much to her surprise, she came back with a trophy for first place and an invitation to the Kanto Koushinetsu Region Speech Contest.
関東・甲信越地区大会では、私は彼女が勝てるように勇気づけましたが、逆に彼女から最大限努力はするけれども、勝つことよりの新しい友達をつくることの方が大事と諭されてしまいました。そして彼女は両方をやり遂げ、見事全国英語スピーチコンテストへの切符を手にしました。
At the Kanto Koshinetsu Region Speech Contest, I encouraged her to win – she admonished me and reminded me that, while she would do her best, she was more interested in making friends than in winning. She did both, and qualified for the National Speech Contest.
有明のような生徒をスピーチコンテストに向けて指導するのは容易なことではありません。それは指導箇所がたくさんあるからではなく、逆の理由からです。彼女はすでに十分な能力を持ち、もう少し大きな声で話すように、という以外指摘するところがなかったからです。渋谷でのリハーサルの間、遠くは北海道、九州から集まった熱心な教員達が生徒のジェスチャー、声の抑揚の一つひとつを指導する姿をたくさん見かけました。私ができたことと言えば、一歩下がって彼女のスピーチを聞き、励まし、親指でグッドサインを送ることでした。
Coaching a student like Aria for a speech contest is difficult, not because there are many areas she needs to work on, but for the opposite reason – because her abilities are already quite strong, there’s not much useful feedback to give her, other than “speak a bit more loudly.” During the rehearsals at Shibuya, I saw a lot of dedicated coaches from schools as far away as Hokkaido and Kyushu guiding their students through every gesture and inflection. As for myself, all I could do was step back, listen to Aria, and give her an encouraging thumbs-up.
本番当日、有明の発表は最後でした。コンテストのレベルの高さに驚きました。多くのスピーチはとても説得力があり、現代の社会状況についての内容で、移民やLGBTQコミュニティーのこと、環境関連の問題がディスカッションの題でした。おそらく、これが有明のスピーチが際立った理由だと思います。シンプルですが、彼女が本当に熱意を持っているものだったからです。
The day of the speech contest, Aria was slated to go last. I was impressed by the competition – many of the speeches were quite strong, and a lot of them dealt with current events. Issues related to immigration, the LGTBQ community, and the environment were all subjects of discussion. Perhaps that is why Aria’s speech stood out as it did – it was a simple topic, but it was something she was clearly passionate about.
入賞者のアナウンスの際、私は彼女がトップ3に入るだろうという強い思いがありました。しかし金子校長は、彼女が優勝すると確信しており、自信を持って彼女のスピーチが一番良いものだったと言いました。そして校長先生は正しく、有明は優勝し、もう１つのトロフィーを手にしました。しかし本当の褒賞は後から届きました。私は彼女が他の参加者達と話しているのを見ました。彼女が本当の目的を達成したのは明らかで、たくさんの新しい友達ができました。
As the winners were announced, I had a strong feeling that Aria would place in the top three. Our school’s principal, Mr. Kaneko, was sure she would win – he confidently stated that it was the strongest speech in the competition. He was right – Aria came in first place, and won another trophy. The real prize, though, came afterwards, as I saw her speaking to her fellow competitors. It was clear that she had accomplished her real goal – she had made many new friends.
