Grade 4: Kumihimo Art Class

G4 Art Class:  Kumihimo “The Japanese Artform of Making Braids”

In art class, Grade 4 students studied “Kumihimo,” the traditional Japanese art of making braids and cords. The art teacher explained to the students how Kumihimo decorations were used as accessories for kimono as well as samurai armor in the past.

The students were each given a disc of cardboard that served as their loom where they weaved yarns. At first, the students thought it was difficult to do, but as they went through the process they found out that it was actually easy. The activity gave students the opportunity to understand and experience a Japanese tradition through their art.
